What's with the hero?

I have a big decision to make regarding my Irish hero in Saratoga Winter: 1865. He starts out, madly in love in Ireland, and winds up in New York City as a policeman. Of course, I will have to discover what forensics they used then and what the duties of a police office were in those days. I have one book that looks like it will give my research a boost.

After I get him settled in New York City, I'll have to get him to Saratoga. I wonder what could happen to him to make him go there. Anyone got any ideas?

I think it should involve a woman or it should be something that is related to his family. He loves his family and is dedicated to helping his brother. But, it would have to be something that would touch a deep cord with him. If his brother was hurt and he had to go to Saratoga. Could be a horse accident that would also cause new concern and fear with a friend of ours that is already living in Saratoga. Just a few things that popped into my head :)

Nikki,
Those suggestions are just great and I think I'm finding my way with this novel. I've got him working with an Irish Wolfhound and might send the both of them to Saratoga. Gotta' have some animals in my books.........
